Snowmobile Oil: 2-Stroke or 4-Stroke, Which XPS Oil and When to Change It

Quick Answer

What oil goes in a Ski-Doo or Lynx snowmobile?

It depends on the engine. Rotax 2-stroke engines (E-TEC and 600 EFI) use 2-stroke injection oil, which you top up in the oil reservoir; BRP recommends XPS 2-stroke oil. Rotax 4-stroke engines (600 ACE, 900 ACE and 900 ACE Turbo) have engine oil that gets changed: BRP recommends XPS 4T 0W-40 and an oil and filter change every year or every 6,000 km.

The right oil protects your snowmobile's engine in the cold, and the wrong one can be expensive. The first thing to know: does your sled have a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke engine? The maintenance is completely different.

This guide explains how to tell which engine you have, which XPS oil BRP recommends for each, when to change the oil on a 4-stroke, and why you shouldn't forget the chaincase oil.

2-Stroke or 4-Stroke: Which Engine Do You Have?

The engine name is in your snowmobile's spec sheet and operator's guide. For 2027 Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, according to BRP's data:

600RR E-TEC, 850 E-TEC, 850 E-TEC Turbo R2-stroke2-stroke injection oil, topped up in the reservoir
600 EFI2-stroke2-stroke injection oil, topped up in the reservoir
600 ACE, 900 ACE, 900 ACE Turbo, 900 ACE Turbo R4-strokeEngine oil, changed with the filter

2-Stroke Engines: Injection Oil

A 2-stroke engine burns its oil as you ride: there's no oil change, but you need to check the injection oil reservoir and top it up as needed, before the season and during the winter. BRP always recommends XPS 2-stroke oil for the performance and life of Rotax engines.

  • XPS 2T E-TEC Synthetic: engineered with BRP for E-TEC engines, low smoke and low odour, officially recommended for Rotax engines.
  • XPS 2T Synthetic Blend: for oil-injected or premix 2-stroke snowmobiles, fuel-injected or carbureted.
  • XPS 2T Premium Mineral: for carbureted 2-stroke engines.
  • Check your operator's guide for the oil your model requires.

4-Stroke ACE Engines: The Oil Change

According to BRP, the oil and filter on a Rotax 600 ACE or 900 ACE engine get changed every year or every 6,000 km in normal conditions. In severe cold, BRP suggests considering a monthly change, because of condensation that builds up in the oil. If the change wasn't done before spring storage, do it in the fall, before your first ride.

During the season, BRP recommends checking the oil level and condition every few rides.

  • The XPS oil change kit includes the oil, filter, O-ring and crush washer: everything you need for one change.
  • XPS 4T 0W-40 Synthetic: BRP's recommended oil for ACE engines; operating range -45 °C to 40 °C according to BRP.
  • XPS 4T 0W-20 Extreme Cold: for easier starts in the coldest climates; range -60 °C to 25 °C, not recommended for hot weather.

Don't Forget the Chaincase Oil

The chaincase has its own oil, changed separately from the engine oil. BRP recommends changing it before spring storage; if that wasn't done, do it before the season. XPS chaincase oil is sold in the exact amount needed for one refill.
