OEM vs Aftermarket Parts: Which to Choose for Your ATV, Side-by-Side or Snowmobile?
By the Groupe Contant Team · Published October 17, 2026

Quick Answer
Should you choose genuine (OEM) or aftermarket parts?
For major mechanical components (engine, drivetrain, brakes, electronics) and while your vehicle is under warranty, genuine parts are the safest choice: they're designed for your model, and the manufacturer's warranty may exclude damage caused by non-approved parts. Quality aftermarket parts are often a good choice for common wear items and accessories, as long as you confirm they fit your model.
When a part wears out or breaks, you usually have two options: the manufacturer's genuine part (often called OEM) or an aftermarket part made by another company. Both have their place, but not for the same jobs.
This guide compares fit, quality, warranty and price, and explains when an aftermarket part makes sense and when it's better to stick with the genuine part.
What Sets Them Apart
| Criterion | Genuine (OEM) | Aftermarket |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Designed for your exact model | Varies by brand; check compatibility |
| Quality | Matches the manufacturer's specifications | Ranges from equivalent to lower, sometimes better for specific uses |
| Vehicle warranty | No warranty compatibility concerns | Damage it causes may be excluded |
| Choice | One option per part | Often several options and styles |
Warranty: The Thing to Check First
Installing an aftermarket part doesn't automatically void your vehicle's entire warranty. However, manufacturers' limited warranties generally exclude damage caused by parts they didn't make or approve, and by modifications. For example, BRP's warranty texts exclude damage resulting from the use of parts not manufactured or approved by BRP.
In other words, if a non-genuine part causes a failure, repairing that failure may not be covered. Read your model's warranty and, if in doubt, ask our parts team before you buy.
When Aftermarket Makes Sense
- Common wear items — brake pads, filters, ski carbides, belts depending on the brand: several specialized manufacturers make quality products.
- Accessories — storage, lighting, protection, comfort: there's a wider selection that lets you personalize the vehicle.
- Older vehicle out of warranty — the warranty concern goes away and price becomes a bigger factor.
- Specific uses — some aftermarket parts target a particular use (for example more aggressive carbides for ice).
When to Stick with Genuine
- Your vehicle is still under warranty and the part involves the engine, drivetrain, brakes or electrical systems.
- Electronic components and sensors — a poor fit or a different specification can cause problems that are hard to diagnose.
- Safety parts — steering, suspension, brakes: exact fit matters.
- You want a straightforward installation with no modifications.

Not automatically in full, but manufacturers' warranties generally exclude damage caused by parts they didn't make or approve. Check your model's warranty text.
Not necessarily. Quality varies a lot by brand: some match or exceed the genuine part for a specific use, others don't. Choose a recognized brand and confirm it fits your model.
Often, but not always. Compare the part's price, but also the fit and the risks if it doesn't work properly.
